Buy 500 gram gold bar The heaviest denomination that is still divisible within your portfolio

Buy 500 gram gold bar

A 500 gram gold bar is one of the heaviest denominations in the range and has a low premium per gram, while you can still spread your position. Two 500 gram bars together contain as much gold as one kilogram bar, but you can later sell half without touching the rest. All 500 gram gold bars at The Silver Mountain are 99.99% pure gold, originate from a refinery on the LBMA Good Delivery List and are delivered with a certificate of authenticity with a serial number.

How much is 500 gram of gold worth?

The value of 500 gram of gold follows the international gold price. You calculate the pure gold value by multiplying the current gold price per gram by 500. If the price moves one euro per gram, the value of half a kilo of gold changes by 500 euros.

That metal value is not the same as the purchase price. When buying you pay a premium above the gold value for production, insurance and distribution; when selling there is a bid price around or just below the metal value. The current value per gram, troy ounce and kilogram is on the page with the current gold price.

To ensure transparency, our product prices are updated every three minutes.

Why do investors choose a 500 gram gold bar?

A 500 gram gold bar has a low premium per gram and remains divisible. At this weight the fixed production costs are spread over half a kilo of gold, allowing you to buy close to the spot price. Unlike a kilogram bar, you do not have to sell your entire position in one transaction.

  • Low premium per gram: you buy close to the pure gold value.
  • Still divisible: with multiple 500 gram bars you build a large position that you can sell in phases.
  • Compact for the value: half a kilo of gold takes up little space and is easy to keep or store.
  • Globally tradable: originating from an LBMA-accredited producer and accepted without extra verification.

If you want a larger position in a single bar, look at the 1 kilogram gold bar. If you seek more divisibility, the 250 gram gold bar is a logical step.

Cast gold bar: why a 500 gram bar looks different

A 500 gram gold bar is a cast bar (cast), not a minted bar. In casting molten gold is poured into a mold, which gives the bar a somewhat rougher surface. Smaller bars up to about 100 grams are typically minted and therefore have a smooth appearance.

At this weight almost only the cast version exists: from producers such as Umicore and C. Hafner there is no minted variant above 250 grams. For the gold value the production method makes no difference; the difference is cosmetic. Many investors actually appreciate the rough, tangible look of a cast bar.

Which producers can you choose from?

At The Silver Mountain you choose from 500-gram gold bars from well-known producers. The gold value is the same for every bar; the difference lies in packaging, appearance and availability.

  • Umicore: Belgian producer, known for sustainable, circular production. Always delivered with a certificate.
  • C. Hafner: German refinery that works with recycled gold, delivered in sealed packaging that also serves as the certificate.
  • Various producers (pre-owned): lower-priced 500-gram gold bars from various producers, inspected for authenticity, weight and fineness.

All bars come from a refinery on the LBMA Good Delivery List. If you want to see all weights from one brand, view the Umicore bars or C. Hafner bars.

500 gram, 250 gram or a kilo bar: what do you choose?

With the heavier weights the choice comes down to one trade-off: a lower premium per gram versus more flexibility when selling. Two comparisons buyers most often make:

  • One 500-gram bar or two 250-gram bars? One 500-gram bar is generally slightly cheaper per gram. Two 250-gram bars together cost a bit more in premium, but you can later sell one bar and keep the other.
  • Five 100-gram bars or one 500-gram bar? Five individual bars offer more divisibility and the possibility to spread purchase moments; one 500-gram bar has a lower total premium, but you sell it as a whole.

The 500-gram bar sits in between: almost the lowest premium per gram, and with two or three bars you retain the possibility to sell in stages. A kilo bar cannot offer that.

Weight Suitable for Premium per gram
100-gram gold bar Balance between cost and divisibility Low
250-gram gold bar Substantial holding without a kilo investment Very low
500-gram gold bar Large position, still divisible Very low
1-kilogram gold bar Largest denomination, maximum efficiency Lowest

Safely storing a 500-gram gold bar

500-gram gold bar

At a value of this size, secure storage is an important consideration. At checkout you choose how you receive or store your 500-gram gold bar. Most customers who buy a 500-gram gold bar choose professional storage. Through our partner Edelmetaal Beheer Nederland (EBN) your gold is allocated and held in your name, in heavily secured vaults in the Netherlands or Switzerland; it remains your property.

There is also a variant with direct storage in Zurich, where the bar is not first delivered to your home. Prefer physical possession? Then we deliver insured with our own courier service, or you pick up by appointment in Baarn or The Hague.

More flexible than a 1 kg gold bar

A 500-gram bar is the largest denomination most investors still find practical. You buy close to the gold price, but with two or three of these bars you retain the freedom to sell in stages later. That combination of low premium and divisibility often makes this weight more attractive for building wealth than a one-kilo bar.

Our offices in Baarn and The Hague are open for personal contact and introductory meetings, by appointment. Our services are rated on Trustpilot with a 4.8 based on 4.562 reviews.

Buyback guarantee

All our 500 gram gold bars come with a buyback guarantee: you can always sell your bar back to us at a fixed bid percentage of 98,5% of the current gold price. The purchase is handled via our sister company Inkoop Edelmetaal, with bid prices that move with the market. This means you know in advance how the price is determined.

A 500 gram gold bar is sold as a whole. Investors who wish to sell in stages therefore often choose multiple bars of this weight.

Everything about price, premium and storing your gold bar

Frequently asked questions about 500 gram gold bars

1. How much is 500 grams of gold worth?

The value of 500 grams of gold follows the current gold price: multiply the gold price per gram by 500 for the pure gold value. The selling price is slightly higher because of the premium; for buybacks a bid percentage applies. Because the gold price moves continuously, our prices are updated every three minutes.

2. Is a 500 gram gold bar exempt from VAT?

Yes, a 500 gram gold bar is exempt from VAT. Gold with a purity of at least 99.5% is legally considered investment gold and is VAT-free throughout the European Union. Our 500 gram gold bars contain 99.99% pure gold and therefore meet this standard.

3. Is one 500 gram bar better than two 250 gram bars?

That depends on your selling plan. One 500 gram bar typically has a lower premium per gram. Two 250 gram bars are more flexible because you can sell one bar later and keep the other. Therefore compare not only the purchase price but also the desired divisibility.

4. Is a 500 gram gold bar cast or minted?

A 500 gram gold bar is cast. At this weight virtually only the cast version exists; producers such as Umicore and C. Hafner do not make a minted variant above 250 grams. Casting gives the bar a somewhat rougher surface, but has no effect on purity, weight or value.

5. What is the difference between a new and a pre-owned 500 gram gold bar?

A pre-owned 500 gram gold bar contains the same amount of gold as a new bar, but has previously been owned. As a result the premium may be lower. The producer, packaging and outward condition can differ. The Silver Mountain checks purchased bars prior to resale for authenticity, weight and fineness.

6. How can I best store a 500 gram gold bar?

You can store a 500 gram gold bar at home in a safe or have it professionally stored via Edelmetaal Beheer Nederland, allocated and registered in your name in the Netherlands or Switzerland. Given the high value most buyers choose professional storage. When storing at home, check whether your insurance covers precious metals of this value.

7. Can I sell a 500 gram gold bar again later?

Yes, a 500 gram gold bar is easily tradable. Because the bar comes from an LBMA-accredited producer, it is accepted worldwide without additional assaying. Through our sister company Inkoop Edelmetaal you can sell the bar back at 98,5% of the current gold price, at a clearly pre-determined, market-linked bid price.
