100 gram gold bar explained
What is a 100 gram gold bar?
A 100 gram gold bar is a cast or minted gold bar containing exactly 100 grams of pure gold, usually with 99.99% purity (999.9 / 24 karat). The bar carries the producer's stamp, the weight, the gold content, and a unique serial number for most brands.
With a value that moves with the gold price today, this is one of the most popular medium-sized bars among private and corporate investors. Despite its high value, the bar is roughly the size of a debit card, making storage simple.
Why buy a 100 gram gold bar?
Investors with larger capital often deliberately choose the 100 gram format because of the balance between costs and flexibility. At this weight, the premium per gram drops sharply compared to smaller bars, while you can still sell your position in parts later, unlike with a kilo bar.
This makes 100 grams the ideal intersection of efficiency and tradability for many investors.
- Low premium per gram: the fixed production costs are divided over 100 grams, keeping the price close to the spot price. This is significantly more favorable than with a 10 gram or 20 gram gold bar.
- High purity: every bar consists of 99.99% pure gold, certified and recognized worldwide.
- Handy size: despite its high value, it is no larger than a debit card, making it easy to store or safeguard.
- Divisible wealth: multiple 100 gram bars give you more selling flexibility than a single large kilo bar.
For those building serious wealth in gold, the 100 gram bar is often the smartest starting point. Your premium per gram is low, but you are not locked into a single kilo bar. You can sell exactly as much as you need later.
Rolf van Zanten, June 2026100 gram gold price: how is the price structured?
The price of 10 grams of gold consists of two parts: the current gold value (100 grams multiplied by the gold price per gram) and a premium for production, packaging, certification, and distribution. Because the gold price fluctuates constantly, our prices are automatically refreshed every 3 minutes so you always buy at the prevailing rate.
The premium per gram is particularly low for 100 grams: this weight is considered the tipping point where you buy close to the spot price. Only larger bars like the 500 gram and 1 kilo are slightly cheaper per gram, but they compromise on divisibility.
The spread (the difference between the buying and selling price) is percentage-wise very favorable at this weight. You can see the current price per 100 gram gold bar in real time for each product on this page.

Why invest in a 100 gram gold bar
Investing in a 100 gram gold bar is particularly attractive because of the low premium. The premium is the surcharge above the pure gold value, which covers production, packaging, and distribution. At this weight, the premium is usually only around 2% to 3% above the metal value, one of the most favorable ratios within the entire gold bar assortment.
The difference with small bars is substantial. Because the fixed production costs for a small bar are distributed over very little gold, the premium per gram there easily rises to over 20%. With a 100 gram bar, those same costs are spread over one hundred times as much gold, meaning you buy much closer to the spot price.
Specifically: out of every euro you invest in a 100 gram bar, the vast majority goes toward the gold itself and only a small part toward the premium.
This is precisely what makes this format so suitable for those who want to seriously invest in a 100 gram gold bar: you pay as little as possible for everything except the gold. The exact premium moves with the market and the current gold price; you can see the precise structure per bar, metal value, premium, and price per gram in real time in the product overview.
Choosing 100 grams of gold or another weight?
The 100 gram bar is the hinge point between cost efficiency and flexibility: larger than the common small bars, but clearly more divisible than a kilo bar. It all revolves around the spread, the difference between the buying and selling price.
At 100 grams, this margin per gram is smaller than with small bars, while you can still sell your position in parts later. To make the right choice, it helps to compare the three weight classes side by side.
Small gold bars (1 up to 20 grams)
Small bars of 1 gram, 5 gram, 10 gram, and 20 grams are the most accessible and provide maximum flexibility upon sale. You step in with a low amount and build your gold holdings step by step. On the other hand, the premium per gram for these denominations is relatively high: the fixed production costs are distributed over very little gold.
These weights suit those who want an accessible start, want to buy periodically, or want to give gold as a gift.
Medium-sized gold bars (50 and 100 grams)
In the medium segment of 50 gram gold bars and 100 grams, the premium per gram drops noticeably, while the bars remain compact and highly divisible. The 100 gram bar is the tipping point within this range: you buy close to the spot price but retain the freedom to sell part of your position later instead of everything at once.
This segment is the logical choice for those building serious wealth in physical gold without entirely giving up flexibility.
Large gold bars (250, 500 grams and 1 kilo)
Large bars of 250 gram, 500 grams and 1 kilo have the lowest premium per gram and are therefore the most cost-efficient for large investment amounts. The disadvantage is the limited divisibility: you always sell a large amount all at once.
Many investors therefore deliberately choose multiple 100 gram bars instead of a single kilo bar to maintain selling flexibility at a still highly favorable premium.
| Weight | Best choice when you | Point of attention |
|---|---|---|
| 10 grams | Are building physical gold step by step | Higher premium per gram |
| 20 grams | Want to remain flexible with a limited budget | Less efficient than large bars |
| 50 grams | Are looking for a middle ground between price and flexibility | Lower gold value per bar than 100 grams |
| 100 grams | Want to buy efficiently and remain divisible | Higher purchase amount per bar |
| 500 grams | Want to allocate a large amount efficiently | Less flexible for partial sales |
| 1 kilo | Are looking for the lowest premium per gram | You always sell a large amount all at once |

Cast or minted, and from which producer?
The Silver Mountain supplies 100 gram gold bars from renowned LBMA producers, such as Umicore, C. Hafner, Valcambi, PAMP Suisse, and Heraeus. The gold value is virtually identical for the same weight and purity; the difference lies in the brand, finish, packaging, and premium.
Cast or minted?
At 100 grams, you encounter both production methods. Minted bars are stamped from a gold plate, have a clean, polished finish, and are usually delivered in a sealed blister pack (assay card) that also serves as a certificate.
Cast bars are created by pouring gold into a mold, have a more rugged appearance, and are often delivered with a separate certificate. For value and tradability, it makes no difference; both contain 100 grams of pure gold. The choice is purely practical and aesthetic.
Note: Umicore exclusively supplies cast bars above 100 grams.
100 gram gold bar or 100x1 gram CombiBar?
A standard 100 gram gold bar is sold all at once and has the lowest premium. A 100x1 gram CombiBar contains the same 100 grams but can be divided into 1 gram segments. This is ideal if you want to sell in small parts later, at a slightly higher premium.
If you choose purely based on the price per gram, the standard bar is the obvious choice; if flexibility carries more weight, go for the CombiBar.
New or pre-owned?
In addition to new bars, we regularly offer pre-owned 100 gram bars: strictly checked for authenticity, weight, and purity, and often at the sharpest price for those looking purely at the gold value. View our current selection of pre-owned gold bars here.
Where does the gold in an LBMA 100 gram bar come from?
With an investment of this size, the origin of your gold is a significant factor. We exclusively order our 100 gram bars from refineries listed on the LBMA Good Delivery List. This status is not granted lightly: producers are periodically assessed on their production process, financial solidity, and how they source their gold.
The latter takes place via the LBMA Responsible Sourcing framework, based on international OECD guidelines. Independent audits must demonstrate that the gold is not linked to armed conflict, money laundering, or human rights violations.
Several of our producers go a step further: C. Hafner, for example, works largely with recycled gold (urban mining), thereby avoiding new mining activities.
For you as a buyer, this counts double. An origin that is verifiable and responsible contributes to the tradability of your bar. Buyers and purchasing agents worldwide accept LBMA gold without any discussion about its source.
Secure storage and direct trading via EBN
In addition to insured delivery, you can have your 100 gram gold bars stored via our sister company Edelmetaal Beheer Nederland (EBN). Your bars are stored on an allocated basis: registered by name and bar number, physically segregated, and fully insured. Through your account, you can see your specific bar numbers and sell your stored gold directly back to us from the vault, without the gold needing to be in transit.
Storage is possible in the Netherlands (Houten) and in Switzerland, via Loomis International. This allows you to combine the security of an external vault with the simplicity of online trading. This is a popular option, especially for larger amounts.
Buying a 100 gram gold bar for business purposes
The 100 gram format is also a popular option for entrepreneurs who want to invest in physical gold through their company. With a value of approximately € 12,000 per bar, you can efficiently build a corporate gold position, benefiting from the same low premium and VAT exemption as private individuals.

Frequently asked questions about 100 gram gold bars
1. How much does a 100 gram gold bar cost?
The price of a 100 gram gold bar consists of the current gold value (100 grams × the gold price per gram) plus a limited premium for production, packaging, and distribution. Because the gold price moves constantly, our prices are automatically refreshed. The premium per gram is particularly low for this weight. You can see the current price in real time in the product overview.
2. How much is a 100 gram gold bar worth?
A 100 gram gold bar contains 0.1 kilo of gold, which is approximately 3.215 troy ounces. You calculate the value by multiplying the current gold price per gram by 100. Because the premium per gram is low for this weight, the selling price is close to the pure gold value. The value moves daily with the gold spot price.
3. Is a 100 gram gold bar VAT-free?
Yes, a 100 gram gold bar is fully exempt from VAT. The bar consists of 99.99% pure gold and therefore easily qualifies as investment gold, for which a minimum purity of 99.5% applies. You pay 0% VAT on your purchase throughout the entire European Union, whether you buy as a private individual or a business.
4. What are the dimensions of a 100 gram gold bar?
A 100 gram gold bar is remarkably compact: the dimensions are usually around 55 x 31 x 3.2 mm, comparable to a debit card. Due to the high density of gold, the bar feels solid and heavy despite its small size. The exact dimensions differ slightly per producer and are listed on the product page.
5. Is a 100 gram gold bar cast or minted?
Both occur. Minted bars are stamped out of a gold plate and have a clean finish inside a sealed assay card; cast bars are poured into a mold and look more rugged. For gold value and tradability, it makes no difference; the choice is purely practical and aesthetic.
6. How do I check the authenticity of a 100 gram gold bar?
Every 100 gram gold bar from a recognized producer carries a unique serial number that matches the certificate, plus the stamp, the weight, and the purity (999.9). The LBMA Good Delivery status safeguards purity and weight. At The Silver Mountain, we also check every bar for authenticity before it leaves our premises.
7. Why do investors choose 100 grams instead of a kilo bar?
Investors often choose multiple 100 gram bars over a single kilo bar due to flexibility. Although a kilo bar has the lowest premium per gram, individual 100 gram bars allow you to sell a part of your gold later without offering your entire position. This way, you maintain more control over your wealth.
8. Can I easily sell a 100 gram gold bar later?
Yes, 100 gram bars with LBMA Good Delivery status belong to the most tradable physical gold; banks and recognized dealers accept them worldwide without additional testing. At The Silver Mountain, you can always sell your bar back via our buyback guarantee, with a transparent process handled through our sister company Inkoop Edelmetaal.
