Do you want to buy gold anonymously or are you looking for a reliable way to purchase precious metals with maximum privacy? It makes perfect sense that you want to keep your financial assets discreet. After all, not everyone in your circle needs to know that you invest in precious metals or that you might store this within the walls of your own home.

Due to tightened legislation, buying gold completely anonymously and paying in cash at a professional and regulated dealer is nowadays ruled out in the Netherlands. However, it is still possible to purchase gold in an extremely safe and private manner.

At The Silver Mountain, we have designed our ordering process in such a way that your privacy is optimally safeguarded without violating statutory regulations. On this page, we explain exactly what is possible in 2026 and how we protect your discretion.

Buying gold safely and discreetly:

The Silver Mountain still offers unique opportunities to purchase gold, silver, and platinum with maximum privacy and discretion via our counter sales.

Why people prefer to buy gold anonymously

The desire to purchase physical precious metals discreetly generally stems from very legitimate considerations. Customers who inquire with us about the possibilities for buying gold anonymously or in cash often cite the following important reasons:

  • Physical safety: Anyone who stores valuable gold or silver at home logically wants to prevent strangers or delivery drivers from becoming aware of this. The fewer people who know, the smaller the risk.
  • Financial privacy: Your personal wealth accumulation is a private matter. Many investors do not want such a large purchase to be visible on a shared bank statement or in regular household administration.
  • Digital anonymity: Due to the massive rise in digital data collection, customers want to prevent their interest in precious metals from being tracked online by marketing agencies and advertisers.

Buying gold in cash: what does Dutch law say in 2026?

Previously, paying for precious metals in cash was the most common way to achieve complete anonymity. To structurally combat money laundering and terrorist financing, the government introduced the so-called Anti-Money Laundering and Anti-Terrorist Financing Act (Wwft). These rules have enormous consequences for buying gold in cash from professional dealers.

Since January 1, 2026, a statutory ban on cash payments of 3,000 euros or more has applied in the Netherlands. This specifically applies to dealers in high-value goods such as precious metals.

Furthermore, it is legally prohibited to artificially split a large purchase into multiple smaller cash transactions to remain below this threshold. This practice, known as "smurfing", is viewed as a direct violation of the anti-money laundering directive.

Why The Silver Mountain does not accept any cash at all

Although cash payments up to the threshold of 3,000 euros are legally still permitted, The Silver Mountain chooses a different and safer policy. We no longer accept any cash payments at our offices at all.

We make this conscious choice to maximally guarantee the safety of our own staff and that of you as a visitor. After all, large amounts of cash always entail major safety risks. By working exclusively with secure electronic payments, we keep our trade transparent, verifiable, and future-proof.

Discreet alternatives to paying in cash

Although paying in cash is not possible, debit card and bank payments at our company approach the discretion of a cash transaction as closely as possible. Due to the abbreviation "TSM" on your statement and an invoice without personal data, your purchase remains private, while the payment proceeds fully in accordance with the rules.

For most customers, this is the best of both worlds: discretion and a purchase that is legally completely sound.

At The Silver Mountain you can buy gold discreetly with our over-the-counter appointment, where your privacy is guaranteed.

The discreet counter sales of The Silver Mountain

Although paying in cash is not possible at our company, we approach the anonymity of a cash purchase as closely as possible. For customers who desire the highest degree of privacy, we have set up a special counter sales service. This process operates without the standard digital tracks of a regular webshop order.

A discreet counter sale always proceeds in 3 simple steps:

  • A telephone order: You call our office and discuss with one of our specialists which precious metal you wish to purchase. We secure your order on the spot at the current gold rate.
  • An appointment at our secure office: Together we schedule a date and time for you to visit our office in Baarn or The Hague. This prevents a package from being delivered to your front door.
  • Debit card payment and immediate collection: You securely pay for your order via a debit card payment or a mobile bank transfer, and you immediately take your gold, silver, or platinum home in an inconspicuous packaging.

How we guarantee your privacy during counter sales

When you choose this special service on location, you immediately benefit from three unique certainties that keep your purchase completely out of sight of third parties.

  • An invoice without personal data: You can choose to have your purchase invoice made completely anonymous. We solely record the general term counter sale instead of your name and address.
  • No online customer account required: Because you place your order by telephone, you do not need to create a digital account in our webshop. This leaves no digital track in our online database.
  • An extremely discreet bank description: With your non-cash payment, only the short and inconspicuous abbreviation TSM appears on your bank statement. Our full trade name is not mentioned anywhere on your account overview.

As a regulated and AFM-licensed dealer, we are legally required to maintain a physical visitor register. We record your name upon arrival to comply with the requirements of the regulator.

However, this register is strictly shielded, is not published digitally anywhere, and is completely separate from your anonymous purchase invoice.

What data does The Silver Mountain record?

Transparency is part of being a reliable dealer. That is why we clearly explain which data we do and do not record:

  • Discreet counter sales: During a discreet counter sale, we note your name in the visitor register. The invoice can be drawn up without personal data. When you visit, we first check your name before opening the door. This way, for your safety and ours, we do not open the door to strangers.
  • Larger transactions: For larger transactions, we may be required under the Wwft to conduct additional customer due diligence and record your identity.
  • Online and marketing: Online and for marketing purposes, we do not record anything if you refuse cookies and do not create an account.
  • Privacy guarantee: Your data will never be sold or shared with third parties for commercial purposes. We process personal data exclusively in accordance with the GDPR.

Promising complete anonymity would be dishonest, as Dutch law does not allow it. What we do instead is keep your precious metal purchase completely private. No name on the invoice, no recognizable statements. Discretion within the rules, that is what it is all about.

Privacy is not tax evasion

Buying gold discreetly does not mean your gold is invisible to the tax authorities. Physical gold counts as wealth in the Netherlands and must be declared in box 3 of the income tax return under "other assets". Privacy from your environment and your bank is completely legitimate; concealing assets from the Tax Authorities is not.

The Silver Mountain values a correct and transparent approach. We are happy to help you purchase your gold discreetly and store it safely, but we always advise you to properly declare your assets in box 3. This way, you enjoy privacy without tax risks.

Discreet storage: your gold out of the house, your privacy guaranteed

Those who buy gold discreetly often do not want precious metals to be visibly lying around the house. External storage solves this: no safe or package at home to draw attention, no one in your environment who knows where your gold is located, and your assets fully insured.

Through our sister company Edelmetaal Beheer Nederland (EBN), you can store your gold safely and privately.

Allocated storage in your name

At EBN, your gold is stored allocated: registered in your name, physically separated from other gold, and always available for withdrawal. You can choose storage in the Netherlands or, via Loomis International in Switzerland, in a bonded warehouse.

Summary: buying gold anonymously and in cash in 2026

Buying gold anonymously is no longer the same as completely unregistered gold buying in the Netherlands. Due to legislation, cash payments from €3,000 are prohibited, and we at The Silver Mountain no longer accept cash.

What does remain possible is buying gold discreetly with maximum privacy within the rules. Through counter sales by appointment, an invoice without personal data, a discreet bank description, and personal guidance, your purchase remains as private as possible.

These are the most asked questions about buying gold discreet.

Frequently asked questions about buying gold anonymously in the Netherlands

1. Can you buy gold anonymously in the Netherlands?

Buying gold completely anonymously at a regulated dealer is unfortunately no longer possible. Precious metal dealers have a legal identification obligation under the Wwft. You can, however, count on maximum privacy with us. We work with anonymous invoices, a discrete bank description and do not require an online customer account.

2. Are you allowed to pay for gold with cash?

No, you cannot pay for your physical precious metal with cash at The Silver Mountain. Due to the tightened legal ban on cash transactions, we no longer accept any amount in cash. With us, you always pay securely via a card payment or bank transfer with a discrete description.

3. Is buying gold with cash prohibited?

Yes, for amounts from 3000 euros, buying gold with cash is legally prohibited in the Netherlands. This ban for dealers was introduced to effectively combat money laundering. Purchasing and owning precious metal privately is of course completely legal. The ban solely relates to this specific payment method.

4. How much gold are you allowed to buy with cash?

Although the legislation permits cash payments up to 3000 euros, you cannot pay for precious metal in cash at all at The Silver Mountain. We apply this strict security policy to fully comply with the Wwft guidelines. You therefore always pay for your order discretely and securely via a card payment.

5. Do I have to show my ID when buying gold?

At the Silver Mountain, during an over-the-counter sale we are legally obliged to securely note your name in our internal visitor register. For large transactions, the Wwft additionally requires a formal identity check. Your personal invoice, however, remains one hundred percent free of all your private details and address information.

6. Is my gold purchase officially registered anywhere?

Your purchase is not publicly registered anywhere and we never share your data with commercial marketing parties. We do keep a shielded visitor register for over-the-counter appointments and we note transaction data when the current Wwft requires this. All your information is strictly processed in accordance with the strict European privacy legislation.

7. Do I have to declare my gold to the Tax Authorities?

Yes, your physical gold legally counts as wealth. You must declare its total current value annually in box 3 of the income tax return. Desiring financial privacy from your own environment is perfectly logical but concealing assets from the tax authorities is a punishable offense.

8. Can I buy gold without creating an account?

For an extremely discrete purchase on location at The Silver Mountain, an online customer account is not required. You simply place your order with us by phone and make an appointment at our office in Baarn or The Hague. Afterwards, you pay very safely on the spot via card payment.
