Information

Gold Krugerrand 1/4 troy ounce coin

The 1/4 troy ounce gold Krugerrand coin has a diameter of 22.06 mm and is 1.88 mm thick. The gold Krugerrand coin is produced in South Africa, by The South African Mint.

The 1/4 troy ounce gold Krugerrand coin is composed of 91.67% pure gold (7.77 grams) and 8.33% copper (0.012 grams). This makes for a total weight of 8.49 grams. This also makes the coin weigh slightly more than other 1/4 troy ounce gold investment coins. Despite the added copper, the coin does contain exactly one quarter troy ounce (7.77 grams) of pure gold. The added copper makes the Krugerrand a more robust coin and therefore less vulnerable to wear.

Kruger & Rand

The gold Krugerrand owes its name to South Africa's former president Paul Kruger and the national South African currency, the Rand. The gold Krugerrand coin has been produced since 1967, making it the oldest investment coin and . The popularity of the Krugerrand makes it one of the most famous gold coins worldwide. The 1/4 troy ounce gold Krugerrand coin is recognisable by its red-orange glow. This is due to the added copper in the coin.

Obverse

The obverse of the 1/4 troy ounce gold Krugerrand 2023 depicts a springbok. The springbok, South Africa's national animal, walks over a desert plant in the image. This plant is called the aloe claviflora and is emblematic of South Africa's landscape. The name of the coin KRUGERRAND and the year are also engraved on the coin. At the bottom of the coin, the weight of gold (1/4 OZ) of the coin is indicated along with the guarantee of gold quality in both Afrikaans (FYNGOUD) and English (FINE GOLD).

Reverse

The reverse of the 1/4 troy ounce gold Krugerrand depicts Paul Kruger. Paul Kruger was the fifth president of the Republic of South Africa from 1883 to 1900. In addition, Paul Kruger also played an important role during the Boer Wars as the most prominent farmer. The image of Paul Kruger was designed by Otto Schultz. Around the effigy of the former president, the country of origin is engraved in both English (SOUTH AFRICA) and Afrikaans (SUID-AFRICA).

Gold coin as an investment product

Unlike other well-known investment coins, the gold Krugerrand does not have a face value printed on the coin. The face value of the Krugerrand is expressed in the amount of pure gold. This guarantees that the South African Reserve Bank (SARB) will buy back every Krugerrand at the then current gold price.

The 1/4 troy ounce gold Krugerrand coin, along with the other Krugerrand fractional gold coins, was introduced by The South African Mint in 1980 to make investing in gold more prevalent.

Investment score: An A-label means that this is one of our most common products. When purchasing physical precious metals, we advise looking at both the lowest price per gram and the lowest spread. The spread indicates the difference between the buying and selling price. An A-label signifies that this is a favorable choice when buying gold and silver.

Investment-score: B-label

Investment score: A B-label means that this is a common coin or bar, which is widely tradable worldwide. However, a product with this label is more expensive than a product with an A-label, so as an investment in physical gold and silver, this product is not the most cost-effective choice.
