Information

Krugerrand 1/4 troy ounce gold coin 2026

The 1/4 troy ounce gold Krugerrand coin of 2026 is produced in South Africa, by The South African Mint. This gold coin is issued on behalf of the government of South Africa as a gold investment coin and has been in circulation since 1980.

The gold Krugerrand coins have a slightly different composition of precious metals than other gold investment coins, this 1/4 troy ounce coin is composed of 91.67% pure gold (7.77 grams) and 8.33% copper (0.012 grams). This results in a total weight of 8.49 grams. As a result, the coin is slightly heavier than the other 1/4 troy ounce gold investment coins. Despite the added copper, the coin does contain exactly a quarter troy ounce (7.77 grams) of pure gold. The added copper makes the Krugerrand a robust coin and less vulnerable to wear. It also gives the coin its recognisable red-orange glow.

Kruger & Rand

The gold Krugerrand owes its name to the former president of South Africa, Paul Kruger, and the national South African currency, the Rand. The gold Krugerrand coin (of 1 troy ounce) has been produced since 1967, making it the oldest investment coin. Due to the popularity of the Krugerrand, it is one of the most well-known gold coins worldwide.

Obverse

On the obverse of the 1/4 troy ounce gold Krugerrand, a springbok is depicted. The springbok, the national animal of South Africa, is seen running over a desert plant in the image. This plant is called the aloe claviflora and is characteristic of the landscape in South Africa. In addition, the name of the coin KRUGERRAND and the year are engraved on the coin. The gold content (1/4 troy ounce) of the coin is indicated at the bottom of the coin in both Afrikaans FYNGOUD and English FINE GOLD.

Reverse

On the reverse of the 1/4 troy ounce gold Krugerrand, Paul Kruger is depicted. Paul Kruger was the fifth president of the Republic of South Africa from 1883 to 1900. In addition, Paul Kruger also played an important role during the Farmer Wars as the most prominent farmer. The image of Paul Kruger was designed by Otto Schultz. The country of origin is engraved around the effigy of the former president in both English SOUTH AFRICA and Afrikaans SUID-AFRICA.

Gold coins as an investment product

The gold Krugerrand, unlike the other well-known investment coins, does not have a nominal value printed on the coin. The nominal value of the Krugerrand is expressed in the amount of pure gold. This guarantees that the South African Reserve Bank (SARB) will buy back every Krugerrand at the current gold price.

The 1/4 troy ounce gold Krugerrand coin was introduced along with the other fractional gold coins of Krugerrand in 1980 by The South African Mint, to make investing in gold more commonplace.

B-label

C-label

Products with a C-rating are primarily valued for their collectible characteristics. This may include limited editions, unique designs, or historical significance. As a result, their price is often less closely tied to the underlying metal value. These products are typically chosen by collectors rather than investors focused on efficiency.
