The Lunar III series
The Perth Mint is currently issuing its third Lunar series. Following the success of the first two series, Lunar III was launched in 2020. Each year, a new coin will be released featuring one of the animals from the Chinese zodiac. The year of the rabbit 2023 is the fourth coin in this series.
The obverse of each gold Lunar III 2023 coin features the same design. At the centre of the 1/4 troy ounce coin - designed by Ing Ing Jong - is a detailed rabbit jumping in various types of grass. Around the rabbit are added references to the Chinese zodiac calendar, such as the text "RABBIT 2023" and the Chinese sign for rabbit. The "P" of The Perth Mint has also been added on this side of the coin.
The reverse side of the gold coin shows the effigy of Queen Elizabeth II, among other things. Various inscriptions have also been added on this side, including the coin's weight "1/4 oz", the gold content "9999 Au", the text "ELIZABETH II AUSTRALIA" and the face value "25 DOLLARS".
The Perth Mint's Lunar collectible coins are based on the Chinese zodiac calendar and the great Chinese race. This zodiac consists of 12 animals and every 12 years this calendar repeats. 2023 is in the sign of the rabbit. According to Chinese legend, each animal influences the personality of people born in the year of that animal. People born in the year of the rabbit are intelligent and creative, according to the legend.
