What is Umicore?
Umicore is a Belgian multinational company specializing in precious metal refining, recycling, and sustainable technology. Founded in the 19th century, the company has developed into an internationally recognized player in the processing of gold, silver, and other precious metals.
Umicore’s refineries are located in Belgium and Germany, among other countries. Their production processes comply with strict international standards regarding:
- Purity and weight control
- Responsible sourcing and compliance
- Supply chain transparency
- Sustainable refining processes
As a result, Umicore is trusted worldwide by banks, bullion dealers, and private investors. Within the global precious metals market, the brand is considered a well-established and reputable name.
Umicore and LBMA Good Delivery Status
Umicore is listed on the Good Delivery List of the London Bullion Market Association (LBMA). This accreditation is granted only to refineries that meet stringent international standards for production quality, purity, and responsible sourcing.
Umicore gold bars:
- Contain at least 99.9% pure gold (999.9)
- Are independently verified
- Are tradable worldwide
- Comply with international trading and compliance standards
For investors, this provides an important level of security. LBMA accreditation enhances liquidity and ensures that Umicore gold is globally recognized as investment-grade bullion.
Umicore gold bars and certification
Umicore gold bars are produced in a fineness of 999.9 pure gold. Newly minted bars are typically delivered in sealed blister packaging with an integrated certificate of authenticity.
This certificate includes:
- A unique serial number corresponding to the number engraved on the bar
- Weight and purity (999.9)
- Signature of the Chief Assayer
The blister packaging protects the gold bar from damage and helps maintain optimal condition for resale.
Umicore gold bars without certificateÂ
Before 2017, smaller Umicore gold bars were not always issued with an individual certificate. In particular, bars under 250 grams were often supplied without sealed blister packaging. Only gold bars weighing 250 grams and above were standardly certified.
These older bars can often be recognized by the Schöne Edelmetaal logo, the Dutch producer that later became part of Umicore. Within the Dutch gold market, this is a well-known historical characteristic.
Is a Umicore gold bar without a certificate worth less?
A gold bar without a certificate is not less valuable. The value of a gold bar is determined by its weight and gold content, not by the presence of a certificate. As long as the bar originates from a recognized LBMA-accredited producer such as Umicore, it remains fully tradable.
A certificate may provide additional confidence in private resale or international transactions, but it is not a requirement for intrinsic value or buyback.
Availability via Inkoop Edelmetaal
Umicore gold bars are sourced at The Silver Mountain exclusively through our sister company, Inkoop Edelmetaal. This means availability depends on bars offered by private or business sellers.
Newly produced Umicore gold bars are currently not supplied structurally. Availability at The Silver Mountain is entirely dependent on secondary market supply through Inkoop Edelmetaal.
C. Hafner gold Bars as a reliable alternative
Within our assortment, C. Hafner is considered a stable alternative to Umicore. This German refinery is also LBMA-accredited and produces gold bars with a minimum fineness of 99.9%.
For investors seeking globally tradable bullion from a recognized European refinery, C. Hafner represents a reliable choice.
Umicore and sustainability
Umicore is regarded as a leader in the circular economy within the precious metals sector. A significant portion of the gold processed by Umicore originates from recycled materials. This reduces reliance on newly mined gold.
After refining, recycled gold is chemically identical to newly mined gold and meets the same purity standards (999.9). Within the professional precious metals market, there is no distinction in value between recycled and newly mined gold.
In addition, Umicore invests in:
- COâ‚‚ reduction
- Efficient material reuse
- Transparent sourcing control
- Responsible raw material procurement
For investors who value sustainability alongside financial returns, this may be an additional consideration when choosing Umicore gold.
