Design of the 1 troy ounce gold Philharmoniker coin
Obverse
The obverse of the 1 troy ounce Gold Wiener Philharmoniker coin exudes simplicity and refinement. At the top, the text WIENER PHILHARMONIKER is prominently displayed against a matte background. At the center of the coin, detailed depictions of musical instruments shine, symbolizing the world-famous Wiener Philharmoniker Orchestra. These instruments, including a harp, horn, cello, and violin, reflect the musical tradition of the orchestra based in the prestigious Wiener Musikverein.

On the reverse side of the 1 troy ounce Gold Philharmoniker, the majestic organ from the Great Hall of the Musikverein (Großer Musikvereinssaal) is depicted. This iconic instrument, a central feature of Vienna's musical life, is surrounded by elegant inscriptions. At the top is the text REPUBLIK ÖSTERREICH, while the bottom contains details such as the weight (1 UNZE GOLD), purity (999.9), face value of €100, and the year of issue (e.g., 2017). The coin’s masterful design is the work of Thomas Pesendorfer, whose attention to detail is evident throughout.

Did you know?
In October 2004, the 15th anniversary of the Wiener Philharmoniker coin was spectacularly celebrated with the release of a special edition: a gold coin weighing an astounding 1,000 troy ounces. This equates to a weight of over 31 kilograms of pure gold, making these coins among the largest and most impressive investment coins in the world. Only 15 pieces were minted, making this edition extremely rare and highly sought after.
The face value of this gigantic coin was set at €100,000, making it not only a visual masterpiece but also legal tender. The design remained true to the classic Philharmoniker layout, with the iconic organ on the reverse and the musical instruments on the obverse.
Earlier editions of the Gold Wiener Philharmoniker, minted before the euro was introduced, have a nominal value of 2,000 Austrian schillings. After the euro was adopted in 2002, the face value was updated to €100 for the standard 1 troy ounce coin, making this coin not only an artistic and cultural icon but also a recognized means of payment within the eurozone.
