In 1714, Georg Ludwig, ruler of the German duchy of Hanover, succeeded on the throne of Great Britain as George I. He brought with her the heraldry of the region, including an ancient tribe of a white horse on a red background. The white horse is an animal with a long history, deeply rooted in the past of Germany and that of the medieval ancestors of George I.

The shield that is depicted is divided into four. The first shows the fleur-de-lis of France, the second shows the Irish harp, the third shows the lion of Scotland and the leopards of England, and the last quarter shows the arms of Hanover.
Queen Elizabeth II is depicted on the reverse of the coin, with a face value of 25 pounds.
