The obverse of the 2014 gold panda coin shows the image of a giant panda sitting on a branch in front of a bamboo forest. The panda stands out strongly in the design due to the many details applied to the panda's fur. This side of the coin also names the face value, weight (1/2 troy ounce) and gold content (99.9% pure gold) of the coin.

The reverse side of the gold panda coins has been the same for years. The beautiful Chinese temple 'Temple of Heaven' is depicted in the centre of the coin. The temple is easily recognizable because of the many details in the design. Surrounding the temple is the year of issue (2014) and the name of China in Chinese characters.
