What is a monsterbox for investment coins?
Update: 12 August 2025 Reading time: 4 min

A monster box is an affordable way to make a substantial investment in gold or silver bullion coins. In this article, you will learn more about a silver monster box or a gold monster box.
What is a monster box?
Many silver and gold bullion coins have a weight of one troy ounce (31.103 grams); this is more or less the standard in the industry. These coins are usually packed in plastic tubes. For most mints, this is a tube of 25 coins, but there are exceptions, such as the Philharmoniker, which is packed in a tube of 20 coins.
These tubes are then packed into a box, and this is called a monster box. A monster box usually contains 500 coins, or 500 troy ounces. Packaging sizes can vary: for example, a monster box of American Eagles contains 25 tubes of 20 coins, while the Canadian Maple Leaf contains 20 tubes of 25 coins.
Advantages of a monster box
The main advantage of a monster box is the lower price per coin: you get a discount per coin when you buy 500 at once. This means you pay fewer extra costs on top of the value of the metal.
In addition, it is an easy way to purchase many coins from the same year and the same mint. If you buy silver or gold at different times, there is a chance that over time you will have coins from different years and mints. This may not make much difference in price, but a monster box from a single mint can be slightly more valuable and easier to trade.
Disadvantages of a monster box
Monster boxes are sometimes not readily available. Especially with the increased demand for investment silver and gold in recent years, availability can sometimes be a challenge. In the case of silver, new coins are also subject to 21% VAT, which can make a monster box with new coins more expensive than so-called pre-owned coins.
Due to their lower price, these are popular and therefore harder to obtain as a monster box.
In addition, buying a monster box is of course a considerable investment, especially in the case of gold. Silver coin monster boxes are therefore more common than gold coin monster boxes.
