The gold 50 Pesos (Centenario): historical bullion coin with a substantial gold weight

The gold 50 Pesos coin was first struck in 1921 by the Mexican Mint to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Mexico's independence, hence the nickname Centenario.

With 37.5 grams of pure gold (1.2057 troy ounces), this is one of the heaviest common historical gold coins: about 20% more gold than a 1 troy ounce coin such as the American Eagle or Krugerrand. The coin is struck in 90% gold (21.6 karat), alloyed with copper, which gives it its warm golden hue and excellent scratch resistance.

The 50 Pesos was regularly issued until 1947 and thereafter, between 1949 and 1972, struck as a restrike invariably bearing the year 1947. Due to this long production run, millions are in circulation, making the coin highly liquid and tradable. You purchase a specimen from various years of issue from us.

If you are looking for a modern Mexican bullion coin in 99.99% gold instead, look into the Mexican Libertad. If you would like to broaden your horizon, view our full range of gold coins.

One of the most recognized gold coins in the world

With millions of specimens struck, the gold 50 pesos is among the most famous historical bullion coins worldwide. This widespread recognition works to your advantage: dealers, banks, and buyers instantly recognize the Centenario by its weight, gold content, and design, without requiring additional testing.

Design and history of the Mexican Centenario

The obverse features the Ángel de la Independencia, the winged Angel of Independence holding a laurel wreath and a broken chain as symbols of victory and freedom, with the Popocatépetl and Iztaccíhuatl volcanoes in the background.

The reverse bears the Mexican coat of arms: an eagle with a snake in its mouth, perched on a cactus, surrounded by the text "Estados Unidos Mexicanos". Along the edge, it reads "Independencia y Libertad". The coin has a diameter of approximately 37 mm.

Most 50 pesos coins traded as investment gold today are official re-issues (restrikes) bearing the year 1947. These contain the exact same 37.5 grams of gold as the original years from 1921 to 1947.

Why 90% gold is more robust than you think

The gold 50 Pesos is alloyed with 10% copper. This does not lower the gold content below the threshold for investment gold, but it does make the coin significantly more scratch-resistant than a soft 999.9 coin. Especially for a historical coin that has passed through many hands over the years, this sturdiness is a practical advantage.

Price and premium of the gold 50 Pesos

The price of the gold 50 Pesos moves along with the live gold price and is refreshed every 3 minutes. In the specifications on this page, you can see the breakdown transparently: the metal value, the premium, and the price per gram.

As a historical 90% coin, the 50 Pesos has a B-label: globally highly tradable, but with a higher premium and spread than modern A-label bullion coins. Therefore, you do not buy this coin for the lowest price per gram, but for the combination of a substantial gold weight and a rich history in a single coin.

Those who focus purely on cost efficiency are better off looking at common 1 troy ounce gold coins. When purchasing multiple coins, a volume discount applies, allowing you to save on the gold 50 Pesos coin price.

Gold 50 Pesos or Mexican Libertad?

The gold 50 Pesos and the Mexican Libertad are both Mexican gold coins, but they serve a different buyer. The 50 Pesos (Centenario) is a historical coin from 1921 in 90% gold, with a substantial gold weight of 37.5 grams and a rich history.

The Mexican Libertad is a modern bullion and collectible coin in 99.99% gold, available in multiple denominations and finishes.

If you choose history and a large amount of gold in a single coin, the 50 Pesos is the logical choice; if you are looking for a modern coin in 24 karat or a specific denomination, go for the gold Mexican Libertad.

Coin Gold content Purity Character
Gold 50 Pesos 37.5 grams (1.2057 oz) 90 percent (21.6 karat) Historical classic substantial gold weight
Mexican Libertad including 31.1 grams (1 oz) 99.99 percent (24 karat) Modern bullion and collectible coin
1 troy ounce coins 31.1 grams (1 oz) usually 99.99 percent Global standard size highest liquidity

The 50 Pesos is one of my personal favorites. You hold over 1.2 troy ounces of gold in your hands, a coin with more than a century of history, and it is known all over the world. For those who want to combine history and gold value, this is a wonderful choice.

The bullion coin from before the Krugerrand

Long before the Krugerrand conquered the market in 1967, the gold 50 Pesos was already one of the most heavily traded gold bullion coins in the world. Mexico was decades ahead of its time with the concept of a coin purely intended to store value in gold.

Frequently asked questions about ordering the gold 50 Pesos coin

How much gold is in a gold 50 Pesos coin?

A gold 50 Pesos coin contains 37.5 grams of pure gold, or 1.2057 troy ounces. The gross weight is 41.67 grams: the coin is struck in 90% gold (21.6 karat), alloyed with copper for extra durability. Consequently, the Centenario contains about 20% more gold than a standard 1 troy ounce coin like the Krugerrand or American Eagle.

What does a gold 50 Pesos coin cost?

The price of a gold 50 Pesos follows the live gold price, plus a premium. Because it is a historical B-label coin, this premium is slightly higher than for modern bullion coins. You can see the exact breakdown (metal value, premium, and price per gram) in real time in the specifications on this page, ensuring you always buy at a current price.

Is the gold 50 Pesos coin VAT-free?

Yes, the gold 50 Pesos is fully exempt from VAT. The coin qualifies as investment gold: it has a gold content of 90%, was struck after 1800, and is a former legal tender. Therefore, you pay exclusively for the gold value and a limited premium, with 0% VAT, whether you buy as a private individual or for business purposes.

Why is the 50 Pesos coin called the Centenario?

The name Centenario refers to the 100th anniversary (centenario is Spanish for centenary) of Mexican independence. The coin was issued in 1921, exactly one hundred years after independence was achieved in 1821. The winged Angel of Independence on the obverse directly references this historical event.

From which year will my gold 50 Pesos coin be?

The gold 50 Pesos is supplied from various years of issue. The coin was regularly struck from 1921 to 1947 and thereafter, between 1949 and 1972, as an official re-issue invariably bearing the year 1947. Because the coin is valued for its gold content, you will receive a specimen from our current stock without a specific choice of year; the gold value is identical for every year of issue.

What is the difference between the 50 Pesos and the Mexican Libertad?

The 50 Pesos is a historical coin from 1921 containing 37.5 grams of gold with a 90% purity (21.6 karat), alloyed with copper. The Mexican Libertad is a modern Mexican coin in 99.99% goud, available in multiple denominations and finishes. The 50 Pesos centers around history and gold weight, while the Libertad focuses on modern bullion and collectible gold.

Is the gold 50 Pesos a good investment coin?

The gold 50 Pesos combines a substantial gold weight with global tradability and a rich history. As a B-label coin, it carries a slightly higher premium than modern bullion coins, but it remains highly liquid. As with all physical gold, its value moves with the market and can rise or fall.

Investment score

A B-rating indicates products that are still widely recognized and tradable worldwide, often issued by reputable mints or refiners. However, the price per gram or spread is generally slightly higher compared to A-rated products. While still suitable for investment purposes, they are not the most cost-efficient option available.

Label information
A-label

Products with an A-rating are among the most commonly traded and liquid options available. These coins and bars offer a strong balance between a competitive price per gram and a low spread, making them well-suited for investors who want to acquire physical gold or silver efficiently. Due to their global recognition, they are typically easy to buy and sell.

B-label

C-label

Products with a C-rating are primarily valued for their collectible characteristics. This may include limited editions, unique designs, or historical significance. As a result, their price is often less closely tied to the underlying metal value. These products are typically chosen by collectors rather than investors focused on efficiency.
