Portrayed in a vibrant new design for 2022, Britannia Silver coin - the noble female warrior who appeared on Roman coins nearly 2,000 years ago - continues to inspire a nation.

Any designer asked to reimagine Britannia understands that they carry on a time-honored tradition and for 2022, product designer Dan Thorne has created a truly striking interpretation of the icon. Britannia first appeared on silver and gold coins minted in Roman times and was revived on circulating coins 350 years ago, during the reign of Charles II, when she appeared on the reverse of copper half farthings and farthings. Since then, Britannia has been featured on the silver and gold coins of every British monarch and has been a symbol of hope and strength of character in challenging times. Dan Thorne's design incorporates celebrated, traditional imagery, including the trident, shield and lion, while featuring a bold, modern backdrop filled with sunbeams and rising waves.

The reverse of the coin shows, within a dotted central circle, the standing figure of Britannia, the female personification of Great Britain, looking to the left. She wears a Corinthian crested helmet, pushed back to reveal her face. In her right hand she holds a trident; in her left hand is a shield with the roaring face of a lion on it. In the background, waves and the English flag.

The obverse of the coin shows the head of Queen Elizabeth II facing right, with the diamond diadem crown on her head.
