He is ruler of heaven and earth and had control over lightning. Furthermore, he was the son of the titans Cronus and Rhea. After he deposed his father from the throne, he became the sky god and protector of law and morality. Also, the constellation Leo/lion is the "king" of the zodiac and therefore aligns perfectly with Zeus. Thus, the lion represents courage, generosity, security and strength.
