Van Gogh finished it 6 weeks before his death and this was during the period when Van Gogh was struggling with depression. Dr. Gachet was his doctor at the time. The 2 troy ounces Van Gogh coin is a beautiful coin that depicts the portrait of Dr. Gachet. The portrait on the Van Gogh coin is entirely on a scale, with a diameter of 110x145 mm. With the help of the “Bi-Metal Max” technique, a new coin technique, the Van Gogh coin got its remarkable weight. This weight was made possible by a copper base of 33.5 Troy ounces with a top layer of 2 Troy ounces of pure silver. The Van Gogh coin has a very limited edition of 500 pieces.

Design of the Van Gogh coin

The obverse of the Van Gogh coin features the last letter that Van Gogh wrote to his brother Theo. In the corner of the obverse of the coin is a small etching of the portrait of Dr. Gachet engraved. On the reverse of the Van Gogh coin is a replica of the portrait of Dr. Gachet, painted by Van Gogh, displayed. This image shows through a high relief a 3D and lifelike image of Dr. Gachet. The Van Gogh coin exactly matches the original portrait and even the drooping eyes and tiredness of the doctor can be seen.

Throughout his life, Van Gogh struggled with depression and even cut off part of his ear in 1888. A few of Van Gogh’s best-known works are The Potato Eaters, Sunflowers, and The Starry Night.
