The kangaroo appears together with the Emu in Australia's national coat of arms and is a national symbol. The kangaroo can survive for weeks without water, spends its childhood in a pouch, moves by jumping and is one of the largest mammals on earth. The name kangaroo was given by English settlers and comes from the Aboriginal word ''gangurru''.
