The Kookaburra series was launched by the Perth Mint in 1990. The series was initially launched in silver, and the Kookaburra coin came in a variety of sizes, including 1 troy ounce, 10 troy ounce and 1 kilogram coins. More recently, the Perth Mint has expanded the range to include both a platinum and gold Kookaburra coin.

Design of the 2oz gold Kookaburra 2023 proof
Obverse
On the obverse you see two Kookaburra birds, perched on branches of a tree. Among the birds you see the Waratah flower (also called Telopea), which is the national flower of Australia. The bird on the left is looking over its shoulder with a knowing grin, while the bird on the right has turned its head to see what the other bird is up to. All around are the inscriptions KOOKABURRA - the name of the coin, P – the mintmark of the Perth Mint and 2023 2oz 9999 GOLD – the year of issue, weight and purity of the coin.
Reverse
The reverse shows a portrait of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, designed by the British engraver Jody Clark. In 2015, Clark's anonymous entry was chosen in a design competition to become the fifth definitive coin portrait of Elizabeth II on British coins. Due to the Queen's death, this is the last year that Her Majesty's portrait appears on the coin. At the bottom left of the image is the inscription JC - the initials of Jody Clarks. All around are the inscriptions ELIZABETH II - the name of the Queen, AUSTRALIA - the country of issue and 200 DOLLARS - the face value of the coin.
Authentication feature
The coin incorporates an authentication feature in the form of a micro-laser engraved letter. Detectable under a magnifying glass, it is designed to make it significantly more difficult for the coin to be counterfeited.
