Birds of Paradise

The birds of paradise can be found at Nieuw-Guinea. The locals use the colourful feathers as a currency of as a decoration during several cultural activities of rituals. The Victoria's Riflebird or "duwuduwu" as the locals call it, was discovered in 1848 by John Macgillivray. The bird is called after Queen Victoria, who was the Queen of the United Kingdom in 1848. The colours of this bird have some similarities with the British 'riflemen' at that time, so the discoverer of this bird named it the Victoria's Riflebird .
