The coin was minted by The Royal Mint from Great Britain, who released the first 1 troy ounce Britannia in 1987. This was also the first gold investment currency in Europe. As of 2013, the Britannia coin is struck in a gold content of 99.99%, or 24 carats.
Until the year 2000, the same image of Britannia was shown on the front as standard, but since 2001 a different design has been used in the odd years. The reverse of the Britannia coins features the portrait of Elizabeth II, the head of state of Great Britain.
The gold Britannia coins are sold as investment gold and are therefore taxed at 0% VAT. In addition to legal tender status, the coin has a certain collector's value and is popular among coin collectors and investors in physical gold.
