Lunar gold coin 2023
This small fractional 1/10 troy ounce coin is part of The Lunar III series from The Perth Mint. The beautiful gold coin is struck in 99.99% pure gold and the design is based on the Chinese zodiac calendar just like every year. The year 2023 is therefore dedicated to the rabbit. To protect the coin, it comes in a clear acrylic coin capsule.
The Lunar III series
The Perth Mint is currently issuing its third Lunar series. Following the success of the first two series, Lunar III was launched in 2020. Each year, a new coin will be released featuring one of the animals from the Chinese zodiac. The year of the rabbit 2023 is the fourth coin in this series.
Design gold Lunar 2023
Obverse
The obverse of the 2023 gold Lunar III coins all have the same design. At the centre of Ing Ing Jong's design is a beautifully depicted rabbit. The rabbit with its particularly detailed fur playfully jumps in various types of grass. To make the connection with the Chinese zodiac calendar very clear, the text "RABBIT 2023" in combination with the Chinese sign for rabbit has been added to the design. Nor should the "P" of The Perth Mint be missing from the design.
Reverse
The reverse side of the gold Lunar 1/10 troy ounce coin shows several inscriptions in addition to the image of Queen Elizabeth II - designed by Jody Clark. For instance, the coin's weight "1/10 oz", gold content "9999 Au" and face value "15 DOLLARS" are clearly visible. The text "ELIZABETH II AUSTRALIA" can also be read on this side of the coin.
Lunar collector coins & the Chinese zodiac
The Perth Mint's Lunar collectible coins are based on the Chinese zodiac calendar and the great Chinese race. This zodiac consists of 12 animals and every 12 years this calendar repeats. 2023 is in the sign of the rabbit. According to Chinese legend, each animal influences the personality of people born in the year of that animal.
People born in the year of the rabbit are intelligent and creative, according to the legend.
