To celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Buffalo nickel (or nickel Indian Head coin), a five-cent copper-nickel piece minted by the United States Mint from 1913 to 1938, the mint released a special design of the American Buffalo in gold with a proof finish.

Obverse

Reverse
The reverse features James Earle Fraser's classic portrait of an American Indian, as first seen on the nickel Buffalo coin in 1913. Also on the reverse are the inscriptions 2013 - the year of issue and LIBERTY - the American word for freedom.
