Compare the goldprice per gram
Update: 12 August 2025 Reading time: 4 min

In the precious metals market, troy ounces are the standard, but grams often prove to be a very convenient way to compare different gold products.
Charts in troy ounces or kilograms
When you look up the gold price in a chart, you will often see it quoted in kilograms or troy ounces. A troy ounce is a widely used standard in the gold market for gold coins and equals 31.103 grams. It’s not exactly a unit that is easy to convert into grams.
Gold bars are usually produced in grams, although troy ounce gold bars also exist. In addition, the People’s Bank of China produces gold coins in grams; this differs from most other mints, which strike coins in troy ounces or a derivative such as 1/4 troy ounce or 1/10 troy ounce.
The gold price per gram
The gold price per gram can be fairly easily derived from a chart by taking the price per kilogram and dividing it by one thousand. However, when searching for and comparing various gold products, it can still be difficult to compare prices. How do you know, for example, whether the premium on a troy ounce coin is comparable to that of a 20 gram gold bar?
The Silver Mountain helps by clearly listing both the sales price and the premium for each product on the product page. In addition, each product displays its equivalent price per gram, making it very easy to compare different types of gold products and choose the most cost-effective option.
Converting troy ounces to price per gram
If you want to convert troy ounce prices to grams yourself, here’s how:
- Troy ounce price ÷ 31.1034768 = price per gram
- Price per gram × 31.1034768 = price per troy ounce
Difference gram prices for 24-karat and 18-karat gold
It’s important to note that there is a difference between the price of 18-karat and 24-karat gold. Older coins, such as Dutch silver guilders or gold ten-guilder coins, also contain a lower metal content. Always check whether the website is showing the price per gram for the amount of pure metal or for the total product weight. At The Silver Mountain, we are transparent about this and clearly state the net precious metal weight of the product as well as the price per gram of pure metal.
For investment silver and gold, this is usually not a concern. Modern coins are generally 24-karat gold, and even 22-karat coins such as the Krugerrand contain at least 1 troy ounce of pure gold—they are simply slightly heavier than 24-karat coins. The amount of gold you are buying is therefore the same for a 22-karat Krugerrand.
