Exchanging gold: when and how to switch to smaller denominations?

The gold price is currently at a historic high. As a result, even relatively small gold bars represent significant value. A 100-gram bar now exceeds €10,000 in value. For those who want more flexibility when selling, gifting, or liquidating, it may be worthwhile to exchange larger gold bars for smaller denominations.

Why exchange gold?

Exchanging gold into smaller denominations makes it easier to sell or liquidate your holdings step by step. You don’t have to sell an entire 100-gram or 250-gram bar at once but can respond in smaller portions to price fluctuations or liquidate part of your gold position. When gifting gold, smaller units are also practical: you decide exactly how much you transfer, without parting with your entire holding.

Choice of smaller denominations

Gold is available in a variety of weights. At The Silver Mountain, we offer bars starting from 1 gram, though the premium on this size is relatively high. Bars of 5 or 10 grams are often a more attractive choice when exchanging a larger bar.

There are also smartpacks and combibars: sets of small bars that can be separated individually. Gold bullion coins are another excellent option. These coins are globally recognized and available in several weights, such as 1/10, 1/4, or 1 troy ounce.

Exchange service by The Silver Mountain

For clients who wish to exchange their gold, we offer a dedicated exchange service. This allows you to trade one larger bar for several smaller bars or coins. It is also possible to convert part of your gold into silver or to receive a portion in cash.

Our customer service team will gladly prepare a tailored proposal for you. You will receive a clear quotation and can then choose how the exchange is completed: at our office, at your home via our secure courier, or through insured shipping.

Cash payments and new regulation

The Dutch government is preparing legislation that will prohibit cash payments of €3,000 or more. The intended date of implementation is 1 January 2026. This means that transactions above this amount will only be possible via bank transfer.

In light of this, it may be wise to hold part of your gold in smaller denominations. This ensures your gold remains easier to trade and gives you flexibility, even when you decide to liquidate part of your holdings under the new legal framework.

Advantages of smaller denominations

  • Greater flexibility when selling or gifting
  • Ability to sell in smaller steps during price fluctuations
  • Faster marketability and easier transport
  • Prepared for upcoming cash payment regulations

Frequently Asked Questions about Exchanging Gold

Why should I exchange my gold into smaller denominations?

Exchanging larger gold bars into smaller denominations gives you more flexibility. Smaller bars and coins are easier to trade, gift, or sell in part. This way, you don’t have to liquidate your entire gold position at once.

What is more practical: smaller gold bars or gold coins?

Both options are highly tradable. Gold coins have the advantage of being internationally recognized and enjoying strong market liquidity. Smaller gold bars are generally slightly more cost-efficient in terms of premium per gram. The choice depends on your personal preference and objectives.

Is there a difference in premium between large and small gold bars?

Yes. The smaller the bar, the higher the premium per gram. In return, smaller denominations offer greater flexibility when selling or gifting part of your gold holdings.
