History of Golden Ducats

The history of the Gold Ducat is long and rich. The coin was first minted in the 13th century in Venice and quickly became a crucial means of payment in international trade. In the 16th century, the Gold Ducat was also minted in the Netherlands, becoming a symbol of Dutch trading power.

Golden Ducats were a critical means of payment in international trade for centuries. They were well-reputed for their reliable weight and fineness. They were widely accepted in Scandinavia, Poland, and Russia, and frequently used in trade with Asia. Hence, the Dutch Gold Ducat has become one of the world's most important trading coins.

Every year, the Royal Dutch Mint strikes Double and Single Gold Ducats on behalf of the Ministry of Finance to keep alive the memory of the Netherlands' rich trading past. The coins are a beautiful and valuable symbol of Dutch history and culture.

Design of the Double Gold Ducat 2024

The obverse of the Double Golden Ducat 2024 shows a knight with a sword and a bundle of arrows in his hands. The knight is dressed in an armour with distinctive buttons. Along the rim is the motto "Concordia Res Parvae Crescunt", Latin for "Unity makes small things grow". The year of issue 2024 is also clearly displayed in two parts. The obverse is finished with a double circle of dots. This design is based on a design by Johan Willem Marmé, a Dutch engraver who worked at the Mint of Utrecht in the 18th century. The design has been used for the Dutch Gold Ducats since 1956. The knight on the obverse of the coin is a symbol of Dutch strength and unity. The sword and the bundle of arrows represent the willingness to fight for the homeland.

The reverse of the Double Gold Ducat 2024 displays in the middle the Latin text: "Mo. Aur. Reg. Belgii Ad Legem Imperii.". This means "Gold coin of the Kingdom of the Netherlands according to the law of the Empire". The text is surrounded by beautiful (leaf) decorations with an acanthus motif and shells. On the right side of the coin, an image of a roll of silk is seen. The silk refers to the successful silk trade of the VOC. The reverse of the Double Golden Ducat 2024 is a splendid example of Dutch art and culture. The design has remained virtually unchanged for almost 400 years, except for minor modifications in the details.

The story behind the design of the Gold Ducats

The Gold Ducat: a symbol of the Dutch trading past
The Gold Ducat is a unique coin with a long history. The coin was first minted in the 13th century in Venice and quickly became a significant means of payment in international trade. In the 16th century, the Gold Ducat was also minted in the Netherlands and became a symbol of Dutch trading power.

The Gold Ducat is a proof coin, which means that the coin has been manually processed. The coin weighs 6.988 grams and is made of 98.3% pure gold. The obverse of the coin shows a knight with a sword and bundle of arrows. The reverse of the coin displays a Latin text and an image of a roll of silk.

In 2022, the Royal Dutch Mint started a new series 'Dutch trade history' within the Gold Ducats. From 2022 to 2025, a different trade good will be shown on the coin's reverse each year. This year, it is a roll of silk.

The Gold Ducat as an investment coin
The Gold Ducat is also a popular investment coin. This is because the coin has a limited mintage and a high gold content. Therefore, the coin is relatively scarce and valuable. The Gold Ducat is a good way to invest in gold, without needing to buy and store gold yourself.

The Gold Ducat is a beautiful and valuable symbol of Dutch history and culture. The coin commemorates Dutch trading power and the role the Netherlands has played in world trade. The coin is also a lovely example of Dutch art and culture.

Investment score

This product has a B-label (Common bullion coins and bars). This means that it is a common coin or bar that is easily tradable worldwide. However, a product with this label is more expensive than a product with an A-label, so as an investment in physical gold and silver, this product is not the most cost-effective choice. Examples of coins with a B-label are coins with a lower mintage.

Label information
Investment-score: A-label

Investment score: An A-label means that this is one of our most common products. When purchasing physical precious metals, we advise looking at both the lowest price per gram and the lowest spread. The spread indicates the difference between the buying and selling price. An A-label signifies that this is a favorable choice when buying gold and silver.

Investment-score: B-label

Investment score: A B-label means that this is a common coin or bar, which is widely tradable worldwide. However, a product with this label is more expensive than a product with an A-label, so as an investment in physical gold and silver, this product is not the most cost-effective choice.

Investment-score: C-label

Investment score: A C-label means that this is a less favorable investment choice compared to a product with a higher investment score. Products with a C-label are considered collectibles.
